Auchi Polytechnic, located in Edo state, is one of Nigeria’s leading Polytechnics in Nigeria. The Institution offers a variety of programmes and degrees which are discussed in this article.

Auchi Polytechnic is one of the first four Polytechnics in Nigeria. It was founded in 1963, first, as a technical college and later in 1973 as a Polytechnic. The extent law establishing it assigns to the institution the task of producing well trained and highly skilled middle level manpower for the national economy in the areas of engineering technology, science environmental studies, Management studies and Art & Design.

Auchi Polytechnic Requirements for Admission

Candidates applying for a Post Higher National Diploma (Psot HND) in the following courses:

  • Urban and Regional Planning
  • Civil Engineering Technology
  • Mechanical Engineering Technology (Production)
  • Building Technology
  • Electrical Power/Electrical (Machine Option), and
  • Polymer Technology
  1. Must have obtained a minimum of lower credit in the Higher National Diploma (HND) from Auchi Polytechnic or any other recognized institution whose courses have earned NBTE Accreditation or any other equivalent. Candidate must also have completed the National Youth Service Corps Scheme (NYSC)
  2. Candidates applying for any of the Higher National Diploma (HND) courses must have obtained the National Diploma (ND) with a minimum of a lower credit or an equivalent qualification from the Polytechnic or any other similar institution whose courses have earned NBTE accreditation.
  3. Candidates must also have met the Auchi Polytechnic Matriculation requirements for the National Diploma Programme and have at least one year Industrial experience after their National Diploma (ND) programme. 
  4. In the occasion where a candidate falls short of a lower credit in his or her qualifications, it can be made up for if such a candidate has at least two years post ND industrial experience.
  5. In the department of Office Technology and Management, candidates with good grades in skill subjects such as Shorthand, Computer Science Technology and Typewriting have an added advantage.

HND Programmes for Science Laboratory Technology Options & Courses

Higher National Diploma (HND) (2 Years) Programmes

In addition to the general requirements for admission into the HND programmes in the institution, below are specific requirements for some of the courses:

Physics/Electronics option

Candidates must have obtained credit passes in five subjects including English Language, Mathematics, physics, Chemistry and either one of Biology and Agricultural Science

  1. i) Chemistry/Biochemistry option

Candidates must have obtained credit passes in five subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and either one of Physics and Geography (at least a pass in Physics is required)

(ii) Biology/Microbiology option

Candidates must possess credit passes in five subjects to include English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and any one of Physics, Geography or  Agricultural science (at least a pass in Physics is required)

Requirements for Admission into Preliminary Programmes

A preliminary programme is a one year preparatory programme/scheme. Candidates must have obtained WASC/NECO/NABTEB/GCE O/L with at least two credit passes obtained in one sitting.

Exemptions to the above rule are in the following courses:

  • Pre- General Arts
  • Pre- fashion design
  • Clothing Technology

Candidates for the courses above must have obtained two credit passes at two sittings or 5 credit passes at a sitting. At least a pass in English language is required.

(a) School of Art And Design

(I) Pre-General Art

Candidates must possess at least two or three credit passes at not more than two sittings or five credit passes obtained at one sitting in any of the following qualifications: SSCE, NECO, GCE, NABTEB or its equivalent. Of the two or three credit Passes, one Credit or pass should be in any Art or Science subject.  Candidates with at least a Pass in English Language are at an advantage.

 (Ii) Pre-Fashion Design and Clothing Technology

Candidates for the above programme must possess at least five (5) passes which must include  English Language at the SSCE/GCE/NECO/NABTEB or its equivalent. Two of the credit passes should be in any of the following subjects: Literature in English, Economics, Clothing and Textiles, Government, Christian Religious Knowledge, Islamic Religious Knowledge, Technical Drawing, Art, Chemistry, Commerce, Health, Science History and Geography.

(III) Pre-Ceramics and Glass Technology

Candidates for the programme must possess three credit passes and a pass in English Language obtained at not more than two (2) Sittings. One of the credit passes should be from any of the following science subjects: Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Agricultural Science or Mathematics.

  Also, a candidate with five passes obtained in one sitting in SSCE, NECO, GCE O/L, NABTEB and its equivalent in any of the following subjects: English Language, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Technical Drawing, Geography, Economics, Fine Art, Christian Religious Knowledge, Islamic Religious Knowledge, Biology, Literature in English Agric-Science, and Government is also eligible.

School of Applied Sciences and Technology

(I) Pre-Science Laboratory Technology

A candidate must have three credit passes in SSCE/(GCE) O/L, NECO, or NABTEB with a pass in English Language and Mathematics. The three credits must include Biology, Chemistry and Physics

(II) Pre-Statistics

Candidates must have three credit passes to include Mathematics and two from any of these subjects: English Language, Biology, Economics and Physics/Geography.

(III) Pre-Computer Science

Candidate must have obtained two credit passes to include Mathematics with at least a pass in Physics.

(III) Pre-Polymer Technology

Candidates must have three credit passes obtained in not more than two sittings to include Mathematics and Chemistry.

(IV) Pre-Catering & Hotel Management

Candidates must have four credits passes in WASC/ NECO/SSCE/NABTEB obtained in not more than two (2) sittings. The credit passes must include Biology/Agricultural Science and any two (2) of the following subjects:  Economics, Geography, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and Commerce.

(V) Pre-Food Technology

Candidate for this course must have four credit level passes in SSCE/NECO/NABTEB obtained in not more than two (2) sittings. These credit passes must include Biology and any other two from the following: Physics, Chemistry, Food & Nutrition, Economics, Geography, Health Science and any other subject. At least, a pass in English Language and Mathematics is compulsory.

School of Engineering Technology

(I) Pre-Civil Engineering Technology

Candidates must have three credit passes in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry obtained in one sitting. At least a pass in English Language is also required

(II) PRE-ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY

Candidates must have three (3) Credit Passes in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry with at least a pass in English Language obtained at one sitting.

(III) Pre-Mechanical Engineering Technology

Candidates must have qualifications in SSCE/NECO/NABTEB or its equivalent with a pass in English Language and three credit passes in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry at a sitting or a candidate with any other basic training and remedial courses recognized or acceptable by the institution will also be considered.

  1. IV) Pre-Agricultural Engineering Technology

Candidates must have three credit passes in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry with at least a pass in English Language at one sitting.

(v) Pre-Mineral Resources Engineering Technology

Candidates must have three credit passes at one sitting in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry with at least a Pass in English Language at one sitting

School Of Environmental Studies

(I) Pre-Building Technology

Candidates must possess a minimum of two credit passes or three which must include Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry and any other subject chosen from Further Mathematics, Fine Art or Technical Drawing, Economics, Geography, Biology, Religious Knowledge and Agricultural Science.

Candidates who have undertaken and have good grades in subjects such as Concreting, Woodwork, Technical Drawing, Block Laying and Building Practices may apply.

(II) Pre-Estate Management

Candidates must have a minimum of three (3) credit passes. Two of these credit passes must be from any of Mathematics, Economics/Geography, English Language, Biology/Agricultural Science.

(III) Pre-Surveying & Geoinformatics

Candidates must possess a minimum of three credit passes obtained at not more than two sittings. The two (2) Credit passes must include Mathematics and Physics and at least a Pass in English language.

(IV) Pre-Urban & Regional Planning

Candidates must have a minimum of three credit passes. The two credit passes must include Mathematics and Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Agricultural Science, Agricultural/Economics, Technical Drawing/Fine Art. At least a Pass in Mathematics is required.

(V) Pre-Quantity Surveying

Candidates must a possess minimum of three credit passes. Two credit passes must include Mathematics and Physics and at least a pass in English Language.

Pre-Architectural Technology

Candidates must have three credit passes to include Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry and any other subject from the following:  Fine Art, Technical Drawing, Economics, Geography, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Religious Knowledge, Government and English Language. At least a Pass in English Language is also acceptable.
